Nshan began boxing in 1976 in Armenia and quickly developed into an exceptional fighter. During his amateur career, he competed at the highest levels of international boxing and achieved numerous victories and championships.
In 1987, Nshan won the European Amateur Boxing Championships, becoming European champion in the light-flyweight division. He later represented the Soviet Union at major international competitions before proudly representing independent Armenia following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
One of the greatest accomplishments of his career came in 1993, when Nshan won gold at the World Amateur Boxing Championships in Tampere, Finland. He became the first world champion representing independent Armenia. For the first time, the Armenian flag was raised in his honor and the Armenian national anthem was played during the medal ceremony, marking a historic and deeply meaningful moment for Nshan and for Armenia.
In 1994, he continued his success by winning gold at the World Cup in Bangkok. These accomplishments helped establish Armenia as a force in international boxing, and Nshan became an important figure in Armenian boxing history.
Nshan also represented Armenia at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, competing against some of the world's best boxers.
